Containerized power system being craned into position on a remote site
    HARSH ENVIRONMENT

    Oil,Gas&Offshore

Remote, corrosive, hazardous, and a long way from the nearest spare. Equipment specification for this sector is really a logistics decision wearing an engineering hat.

    Corrosion
    C3 to C5M rated
    Enclosure
    IP54 / IP55 outdoor
    Deployment
    Containerized, craneable
    Operation
    On-grid or islanded

Downtime here is not measured in hours.

A compressor station that drops offline does not simply restart. Restaging a process, re-establishing pressure, and working through the safety case can turn a supply disturbance into days of lost production, before anyone counts the flaring, the contractual penalties or the incident review.

Which makes the specification conversation different. Equipment for upstream and midstream operations has to survive salt, dust, humidity and temperature extremes with the maintenance interval of something nobody can reach quickly. C5M corrosion grading, IP55 enclosures and liquid cooling are not premium options here; they are the baseline for equipment that has to last where it is going.

Remote operations add a second requirement: independence. Islanded microgrids with grid-forming storage keep a site running when there is no network to lean on, and can black start the site's own generation after a trip rather than waiting for external supply.

    THE PROBLEM

    The operating environment

    • Corrosive and abrasive atmospheres

Salt spray offshore, sand and dust onshore. Standard enclosure and coating specifications fail early, and replacement logistics dominate the whole-life cost.

    • Weak or absent grid

Remote sites run on local generation with little inertia. Load steps that a strong network would absorb cause frequency and voltage excursions instead.

    • Large motor starting

Compressors, pumps and drilling loads draw heavy starting current, depressing voltage across the site and tripping adjacent equipment.

    • Long logistics tails

A part that is a next-day item elsewhere is a two-week item here. Redundancy, held spares and modular repair architecture matter more than headline efficiency.

    • Restart complexity

Process plant does not simply resume. Ride-through capability is worth far more than fast recovery, because recovery is the expensive part.

    • Hazardous area constraints

Equipment siting, enclosure rating and cable routing are constrained by area classification, which narrows what can be deployed where.

    WHAT CHANGES

Numbers that matter in this sector.

    C5M
    Corrosion grade available
The most aggressive marine and industrial category, for enclosures that have to survive where they are sent.
    IP55
    Enclosure rating
Outdoor-rated containerized systems that need no building to be commissioned.
    Off-grid
    Operating mode
Grid-forming storage capable of black start and islanded operation without external supply.
    < 5 min
    MTTR target
Modular architecture on the SVG platform designed for module-level repair, not system replacement.
    TRACK RECORD

    Work we have done here.

    • Containerized systems specified to C4/C5 corrosion grades for exposed and coastal deployment
    • Crane-set container installations completed on constrained live sites
    • Islanded operation and black start capability engineered into storage deployments
    • Remote diagnostic support cutting mobilization down to the visits that need a body on site
    COMMON QUESTIONS

    Questions from this sector.

Can equipment be supplied for hazardous area classification?
Equipment siting and enclosure specification are set against the site's area classification on a project basis. In most cases power conversion equipment is located in a safe area with appropriate separation, and we work to the classification drawings rather than assuming them.
How do you handle spares for remote sites?
By designing for module-level repair and agreeing a held-spares package up front. The modular architecture means a failure is a module swap rather than a system replacement, and critical spares are held either on site or at the nearest service centre depending on the response time you need.
Can you support an islanded site with no grid connection?
Yes. Grid-forming storage provides the voltage and frequency reference an islanded network needs, supports black start after a trip, and delivers virtual inertia that damps the load steps a weak local generation set cannot absorb on its own.
