    GRID CONNECTION

    Renewables&EnergyStorage

Generation projects are won and lost at the connection. We do the studies that get the offer accepted and build the equipment that makes the compliance real.

    Compensation
    Containerized to 55 kV
    Storage
    Grid-forming to 50 MWh

Two thirds of the risk is in the paperwork.

Turbines and panels are commodities with well-understood performance. What is not commoditized is the connection: the studies, the compliance evidence, the protection coordination, and the negotiation with a network operator who has every reason to be conservative. That is where programs slip and where returns get eroded.

We work both halves. Our consultancy produces the G99 and Grid Code simulation studies, P28 and G5 power quality assessments, protection coordination and EMT modeling, all in DIgSILENT PowerFactory, using validated inverter and PPC models and presented the way the operator wants to read them. Our engineering side then delivers the compensation and storage that the studies committed to.

And where the grid connection is the constraint rather than the goal, GridLink offers a different route entirely: sell the generation directly to a local consumer over a private wire, at a higher unit value than export, with a G99-compliant converter making the arrangement acceptable to the DNO.

    THE PROBLEM

    What holds projects up

    • Studies rejected or reworked

Modelling assumptions that do not match the operator's network model send a study pack back, and each round trip costs weeks against a connection window.

    • Reactive capability shortfall

Compliance requires reactive capability across the voltage range that inverters alone often cannot deliver at the point of connection, particularly on long collector systems.

    • Fault ride-through and FFCI

Requirements have tightened. Equipment that satisfied an earlier interpretation of G99 may no longer be compliant, and retrofitting compliance late is expensive.

    • Harmonic and flicker limits

G5 Stage 2 and Stage 3 assessments and P28 studies frequently become the binding constraint on how much capacity can be connected.

    • Curtailment and export constraint

Where export capacity is limited or expensive, generation is spilled. Storage or a private wire arrangement converts that spill into revenue.

    • Remote sites, no buildings

Substation yards on hillsides and moorland have no indoor space. Everything has to arrive factory-tested, outdoor-rated and craneable.

    COMMON QUESTIONS

    Questions from this sector.

Can you take on a connection application that has stalled?
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. We review the existing study pack and the operator's objections before quoting, so you are not paying again for work that is still valid. Where the original modeling assumptions have gone stale, we say what has to be redone and why.
Do you supply equipment, studies, or both?
Either. Consultancy is offered standalone and much of our study work is for projects where somebody else is supplying the hardware. Where we do both, the sizing recommendation is one our own engineering team has to deliver against, which tends to make it realistic.
Is a private wire arrangement better than export?
Commercially it usually is: a generator sells at a higher unit value than conventional export, and the consumer buys below grid import price. The constraint is engineering and regulatory, not commercial, which is what GridLink exists to solve. Whether it beats export for your project depends on having a suitable consumer within reach.
